Egypt to Deploy AI-Powered Drones to Enhance Environmental Monitoring

New government initiative supports pollution control, urban oversight and sustainable development under Vision 2030

Egypt has signed an agreement to deploy an advanced aerial monitoring system powered by artificial intelligence (AI), reports Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Local Development and the Ministry of Environment, will introduce smart drones capable of real-time surveillance and geospatial data analysis across the country’s governorates. The system is designed to enhance decision-making, improve public service delivery and support sustainable development objectives.

Minister of Environment Manal Awad stated that the project would bolster monitoring in several areas directly affecting citizens’ quality of life. These include the detection of building violations, improved waste management, and the tracking of pollution sources – particularly the seasonal “black cloud” caused by agricultural burning.

The drones will also play a key role in safeguarding natural reserves, monitoring encroachments on protected areas, and supporting national afforestation efforts under Egypt’s 100 Million Trees initiative. In addition, the technology will strengthen environmental inspection and oversight of municipal services.

According to the ministries, the system incorporates advanced spectral imaging technologies capable of identifying and analysing pollution sources with a high degree of precision. This forms part of Egypt’s broader strategy to integrate cutting-edge digital solutions into government operations.

Manal Awad described the project as a “qualitative leap” in environmental oversight, emphasising its importance for accelerating the country’s digital transformation and achieving the sustainability targets outlined in Egypt Vision 2030.
