European giants are drooling at the prospect of signing former Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng, whose rapid rise in Belgium has reportedly put him on the radar of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Napoli and Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 21-year-old Bafana Bafana attacker joined Belgian Pro League side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in July after completing a high-profile move from Orlando Pirates. The transfer was reportedly worth €3.5 million (about R65 million), making it a record fee for a South African player moving from a domestic club.
The move had reportedly been agreed in principle before the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by Canada, Mexico and The US, but Pirates and Union SG deliberately kept it under wraps so Mofokeng could concentrate on Bafana Bafana’s historic World Cup campaign. The agreement was formally confirmed by Pirates on 1 July, shortly after South Africa’s elimination.
Mofokeng arrived in Belgium on the back of a standout final season with Pirates, helping the Buccaneers to a domestic treble. His performances for Bafana at the World Cup further enhanced his growing reputation before he embarked on his European adventure.
He has since hit the ground running at Union SG, scoring four goals in eight appearances across competitions and quickly adapting to European football.
Now, according to transfer specialist and Turkish Journalist Ekrem Konur, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Napoli and Brighton are closely monitoring the South African sensation.
For Mofokeng, what began as a dream move to Belgium could already be turning into a springboard towards one of Europe’s biggest leagues.
