Lusaka – President Hakainde Hichilema has been sworn in for a second five-year term as President of the Republic of Zambia.

The inauguration ceremony held at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, brought together thousands of Zambians and several regional and international dignitaries.

President Hichilema took the oath of office alongside Vice-President Mutale Nalumango, following his re-election in the 13 August 2026 general elections.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia declared President Hichilema the winner with 60 percent of the valid votes, defeating his closest challenger, Brian Mundubile.

The inauguration follows the expiry of the constitutionally provided seven-day period for challenging the presidential election, with the Judiciary confirming that no presidential petition had been filed before the Constitutional Court.

Chief Justice Dr Mumba Malila is administering the presidential oath of office, after which President Hichilema is expected to receive the presidential salute and inspect the Guard of Honour as Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces.

The ceremony has attracted regional leaders and representatives of several countries, including Kenyan President William Ruto, who travelled to Lusaka to attend the inauguration.

President Hichilema’s second term begins amid high expectations from Zambians, with citizens looking to the new administration to consolidate economic gains, improve livelihoods and accelerate national development.

The inauguration also comes against a backdrop of heightened political tensions following the disputed election and the detention of opposition leader Brian Mundubile on treason-related allegations.

President Hichilema first assumed office in August 2021 after defeating then-incumbent Edgar Lungu. His second term will be his final constitutionally permitted five-year term.
