Algerian club MC Alger has shared the details of Rulani Mokwena’s exit from the club, as he heads to Libya to join Al Ittihad.

Mokwena’s departure was confirmed on Saturday, after eight months with the Ligue 1 side. MC Alger have revealed the details of Mokwena’s exit, with the club confirming he had to pay over an amount equivalent to two salaries.

“The management of MC Alger Club announces the departure of South African coach Rulani Mokwena from the club’s technical staff, following the activation of the clause that ends his duties as head of the first team, as the contract included a clause requiring the coach to pay two salaries if he wished to leave,” said MC Alger.

“This decision came after a meeting between the coach and the club management, during which he expressed his conviction to end his experience with the team after a period lasting eight months.

“During this period, Mokwena was able to lead the team to win the Algerian Super Cup, and the team maintained the top position in the professional league under his supervision from the early rounds of the season, in an experience that also saw the team eliminated from the Algerian Cup and the CAF Champions League competitions.

“The management of MC Alger extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to coach Rulani Mokwena and his technical staff for their work and efforts throughout their supervision of the team; it wishes them full success and prosperity in their future professional endeavors.”

The two salaries due to MC Alger are a small price to pay for Mokwena, who’s reportedly set to pocket R1.4 million per month at Al Ittihad, making him the highest-paid coach on the continent.

Mokwena, meanwhile, has bid MC Alger goodbye in a statement released on Sunday morning.

“Gratitude. Respect. Emotion. Today I say thank you to MC Alger. It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of such a historic club and to share this journey with incredible players, dedicated staff, and the most passionate supporters. Football brings many moments, but the bonds created through honesty, hard work, and shared belief are the ones that stay with you forever,” says Mokwena.

“To the players and staff—thank you for your commitment, your effort, and the spirit we tried to build together every day.

To the supporters of MC Alger, your passion is extraordinary. The atmosphere you created, especially at our home stadium, is something I will never forget. Hearing you sing Ballon et Cinema will always remain one of the most emotional and beautiful memories of my career.

“Although this chapter comes to an end with sadness, I leave with deep gratitude and humility for having been part of this family, even for a short time.

“I wish the club, the players, and all the supporters continued success and many proud moments ahead. With sincere respect and thanks.”
