Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine now holds the record for the most clean sheets in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), with 19 to his name this season.
He bettered Ronwen Williams’ record, which was standing at 18 clean sheets in a season, achieved by the Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper a few seasons ago.
Chaine has played a pivotal role in defence to help Pirates challenge Sundowns for the league crown. The Buccaneers have only conceded 12 goals in 28 outings, and the recent talking point is Chaine keeping the clean sheets, leading to him breaking the record.
“I am very proud of him. Sipho is one of the best keepers in Africa, not only in the country, with Ronwen Williams, the keeper of Kaizer Chiefs (Brandon) Petersen. They are really great keepers,” said Pirates coach Abdelsam Ouaddou.
“For us, Sipho helped a lot in the team. You can see he has a lot of experience; he talks to his teammates. I think he is one of the captains on the field.
“It’s very important, as a coach, to have someone that you can rely on in the defence. I give him credit, but also, I give the whole team credit because they work hard for these clean sheets,” added Ouaddou.
Despite Chaine’s record-breaking season, his place in the Bafana Bafana squad for this year’s FIFA World Cup is not guaranteed, as per recent reports.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is considering calling up number one keeper and captain Ronwen Williams, as well as Ricardo Goss and Brandon Petersen.
