Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has called on footballers to make moves that are of benefit to their careers rather than a hindrance.

Broos was responding to questions surrounding the non-selection of certain players, including Mamelodi Sundowns duo Jayden Adams and Fawaaz Basadien, who left Stellenbosch FC when they were regulars in the national team.

“(Jayden) wanted to go to Sundowns, but he doesn’t play. He should have stayed in Stellenbosch or chosen another option if he had another option,” said Broos, whose side will play Zimbabwe on Friday in a FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier in Durban.

“For players, it’s important that you play, and not directly where you play. But you have to play, and this is not the case with Jayden now. There is a reason for it. Why is he not playing? Maybe they are not happy with him; otherwise, he should play. I mean, (Sundowns midfielder) Teboho (Mokoena) is always playing because he plays well.”

On Basadien, Broos added, “Look what is happening with Fawaaz… I don’t want to say smart, but they have to look at their careers, and maybe now Fawaaz has lost his place at Bafana Bafana. He will not play AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) in December if the situation stays like that.”

Broos has been candid regarding places for the AFCON, saying in no uncertain terms that only those who are playing regularly would be on the flight to Morocco.
