Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is all smiles after the international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique.

Bafana Bafana hosted the two teams at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium. The first match against Tanzania ended goalless, but Bafana Bafana were 2-0 to the good against Mozambique on Tuesday, stretching their unbeaten run to 20 matches across all competitions.

The results mattered little to Broos, however.

The objective was to create a bigger pool from which to select players in future games. Broos handed debuts to as many as seven players over the two games: Renaldo Leaner, Khulumani Ndamane, Samukelo Kabini, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Simphiwe Selepe, Yanela Mbuthuma, and Mohau Nkota.

And the Belgian is delighted with the outcome.

“We scored twice [against Mozambique], so yes, everything is positive about the past few days,” Broos reflects.

“This is something that will make my job very difficult in the next few months when you see that we have 23 players here in Polokwane. You know that there are still maybe also 23 who are with their clubs or who are at home. So that means we can choose now from over 40 players.

“This will be difficult because you have to drop players in September, players who maybe deserved it, but okay. I have to make choices, but this also means players will be more motivated because they know that there are guys behind them who are waiting to take their places. This will bring the level higher; certainly, that will bring the level higher.”

Bafana Bafana will take on Lesotho and Nigeria in September, when the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers resume.
