India and African nations are expanding strategic cooperation in renewable energy and power infrastructure, aiming to accelerate sustainable development and improve energy access across both regions, as reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative was highlighted by India’s Minister of Power Manohar Lal during a high-level India–Africa partnership meeting held in New Delhi. He emphasised that collaboration between the two regions – home to nearly one-third of the global population – goes beyond resource exchange and focuses on long-term structural transformation.

Key areas of cooperation include the expansion of renewable energy capacity, modernisation of electricity grids, development of energy storage systems and improving the flexibility of power networks. The partnership also prioritises institutional development through skills training, knowledge exchange and strengthening sector-specific organisations.

Manohar Lal stressed that reliable access to energy is fundamental to economic growth and improved living standards. He also reiterated India’s support for the global concept of “One Sun, One World, One Grid”, aimed at enabling cross-border sharing of solar energy and building an interconnected international energy system.

Representatives from African institutions underlined the continent’s growing focus on developing bankable infrastructure projects, expanding electricity transmission networks and attracting investment to support long-term growth.

Regional leaders also highlighted the importance of integrated resource management, including water systems, as part of broader sustainability efforts linked to energy and agriculture.

Experts say the strengthened India–Africa cooperation reflects a wider shift towards collaborative energy transitions among emerging economies, with a focus on clean power, infrastructure development and inclusive growth.
