Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze says the club’s goalkeeper, Brandon Petersen, deserves to go to the FIFA World Cup.

South Africa will be participating in the global showpiece and will face co-host Mexico in the opening match of the tournament on 11 June.

Bafana Bafana mentor Hugo Broos will announce the squad on 27 May, and Kaze believes Petersen has done enough to get the nod.

“I just wish to see Brendon Petersen going to the World Cup because he deserves it by the qualities that he has shown, as well as the consistency that he has shown throughout the season,” stated Kaze.

Petersen has kept 15 clean sheets in the league this season, behind Orlando Pirates keeper Sipho Chaine, who has amassed 20, which is a league record.

Interestingly, Petersen and Chaine appear head-to-head for the third spot in Bafana Bafana’s goalkeeping department.

Broos is expected to pick number one keeper and captain Ronwen Williams from Mamelodi Sundowns and Ricardo Goss, who plies his trade for Siwelele FC. Broos has previously said he would not drop Goss, whom he believes is a good backup for Williams.

Kaze, meanwhile, stated that Petersen has put in a tremendous effort for Chiefs and that attending the World Cup would be a well-deserved recognition for the goalie’s hard work.

“I am very happy that this is happening to him. Petersen deserves everything that is happening to him.”
