Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe has been elected the new president of the International Olympic Committee. The election took place on the sidelines of the 144th session of the IOC. This is reported by ZBC News, a partner of TV BRICS.
Coventry succeeds Thomas Bach as head of the organisation. His term expires on 23 June this year. Kirsty Coventry will also be the youngest ever to assume the role.
During her campaign, Coventry vowed to focus on increasing diversity and inclusion within the IOC, as well as promoting the development of sports in Africa and other underrepresented regions.
