South African winger Thembinkosi Lorch played a match to remember for Wydad Casablanca against Juventus, but the Moroccans could not avoid a defeat in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Juventus overcame Wydad 4-1 at the Lincoln Field in Philadelphia, United States (US), on Sunday evening, local time.
Nonetheless, Lorch’s performance was a major talking point.
The 31-year-old ran his socks off, troubling the Italian team’s defence more often than not.
Juventus took the lead inside ten minutes and added a second a few minutes later to make it 2-0, but Lorch replied in the 25th minute with a delightful chip that beat Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio to reduce the deficit.
On loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, Lorch has won the hearts of the hard-to-please Wydad supporters, and if anything, his performance in the second half would have further justified the overpowering of love from those in the Red Castle.
While Juve made it 3-1 in the 69th minute and ended the clash as a contest, Lorch continued to press forward and came close to scoring his second on the day, but couldn’t find the target.
In the end, the Free State-born baller was overshadowed by Juventus adding a fourth right at the death for their 4-1 win, and Wydad have been knocked out of the tournament.
Wydad will now head to Washington for their final group game against Al Ain on Thursday, 26 June, which will be a dead rubber.
Be that as it may, Lorch would be looking to sign off with another fine performance, considering he was rated 7.1/10 against Manchester City in Wydad’s first match, before improving it to 7.9/10 against Juventus.
