The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has come down hard on Mamelodi Sundowns following crowd trouble from their match against Espérance earlier this month.
Espérance supporters, in the region of 600, clashed with the home supporters of Sundowns at Loftus Stadium when the Tshwane team won 1-0 in a CAF Champions League Quarterfinal first leg match.
The Espérance supporters were allegedly the aggressors, but CAF has also punished Sundowns for inadequate security.
“The CAF Disciplinary Board charged Mamelodi Sundowns with having breached Articles 82 and 83.2 of the CAF Disciplinary Code as well as Articles 32 and 35 of the CAF Safety and Security Regulations arising from its CAF Champions League fixture against Esperance (1 April, 2025),” stated CAF in a statement released on Thursday evening.
“The club was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of USD 100,000 (R1.8 million) and is required to strictly implement the safety and security measures specified in the CAF regulations, guidelines, and directives, particularly in their upcoming matches.”
For their part, Espérance was slapped with a fine of USD 150,000 (2.8 million).
“The CAF Disciplinary Board charged Espérance Sportive de Tunis with misconduct and breaching Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code for the inappropriate behaviour of its supporters in their CAF Champions League fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns (1 April, 2025).
“The Disciplinary Board found Espérance Sportive de Tunis guilty and imposed a fine of USD 150,000.”
