Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance of the Premier Soccer League continued on Wednesday night when they walloped Chippa United 3-0 at Loftus Stadium.

The three points picked up by the Brazilians mean they need four points from their remaining three games to seal the title, depending on results by the second-place team, Orlando Pirates.

Against Chippa, Sundowns moved their goal tally to 57 in the league this season, setting a new goals record in a 16-team season, which was established ahead of the 2002/03 campaign.

The 2024/25 season will conclude with 15 teams after the expulsion of Royal AM, but even with fewer games, Sundowns have produced the goods.

The Tshwane side broke its own record from the 2021/22 season, when they finished with 56 goals in 30 games.

With three games left, Sundowns have an opportunity to add more goals, and head coach Miguel Cardoso was pleased.

“Yeah, a solid one. We need to be very solid (against Chippa), and we need to be a full team in the sense of the full moments of the game. I told them if we attack well, we defend well; if we defend well, we also attack well. I think the team is very comfortable in managing the full moments of the game, and that’s how the team has been growing,” Cardoso commented.

The Betway Premiership’s leading scorer, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, has contributed 13 goals, followed by Iqraam Rayners, who has 12 to his name.

The next match for Sundowns is against Stellenbosch FC on Sunday, 11 May, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
