Mbekezeli Mbokazi Takes Home R10 Million

Former Orlando Pirates central defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s salary at his new club, Chicago Fire, has been revealed.

The Major Soccer League (MLS) Players Association has released its latest salary guide, including annual salaries for the four South Africans in the United States of America League.

Mbokazi, who joined Chicago Fire three months ago from the Buccaneers, earns $655,620 (R10.8 Million) annually. This is guaranteed income, excluding bonuses.

The 20-year-old is on a four-year deal with Chicago Fire. It is believed Pirates received approximately R50 Million for the transfer.

Mbokazi’s compatriot, Puso Dithejane, who also turns out for Chicago Fire, banks $283,252 (R4.6 Million a year).

The highest paid South African in the MLS is Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who is on $1,142,500 (R18.8 Million a year). Hlongwane has been with Minnesota United since 2022, following his move from Maritzburg United.

Olwethu Makhanya of Philadelphia Union is paid $338,875 (R5.6 Million a year).

The MLS’s highest earner is Argentine winger Lionel Messi, who is on $28.33m (R462 Million a year).
