The MK Party has written to the Speaker of Parliament requesting urgent security measures for members of the Ad Hoc Committee after the kidnapping of its MP, Vusi Shongwe. The party stated that the incident revealed significant gaps in safeguarding MPs who serve on committees handling sensitive topics.
Shongwe was abducted on the night of November 26, 2025, while travelling with another person. Both were taken by unidentified men who confiscated Shongwe’s phones and forced him to withdraw a large sum of money. A case has been filed at Tembisa Police Station, and police investigations are ongoing.
An internal party message seen by African Times said, “Hon Vusi Shongwe, an alternate member of the Ad Hoc Committee, was kidnapped on the night of 26 November 2025, along with another individual travelling in his vehicle. During this incident, the kidnappers confiscated all three of his phones, issued threats, and coerced him into paying a substantial sum of money. A case was opened at Thembisa Police Station, and investigations are currently underway.”
The MK Party emphasised that the incident has created a climate of fear among MPs involved in committees dealing with politically sensitive issues. The party has now contacted the Speaker, requesting immediate protection for all Ad Hoc Committee members. It warned that Parliament could face legal and financial risks if it did not adequately protect its members.
This kidnapping coincides with the MK Party stepping up its complaints about alleged intimidation related to the committee. On Thursday, the party filed a criminal case at the Cape Town Central police station against private investigator Paul O Sullivan. The complaint accuses him of threatening witnesses linked to the committee, including the Ministry of Police Chief of Staff Cedrick Nkabinde.
Police have yet to make any arrests in the Shongwe case. The Office of the Speaker has not issued a public comment on the matter.
