Buoyed by its recent victories in by-elections that gave the party presence in some municipalities, the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party has decided to establish a local government labour desk.
The desk will give support to the party’s councillors and help it prepare for the 2026 local government elections.
The MKP has councillors in KwaDukuza, Umzumbe, and Richmond in KwaZulu, Saldana in the Western Cape and in Rustenburg in the North West Province.
The establishment of the structure was announced by the party’s Secretary-General, Floyd Shivambu in Johannesburg today, March 4. Shivambu was communicating the decisions of the National High Command, the party’s top leadership structure, following its meeting late last week.
“Because the MK is slowly but surely gaining momentum in the Local government space, we have resolved to establish a dedicated Local Government Desk which will give strategic support to all our Councillors and begin the work of preparing the organisation for efficient and effective leadership of Municipalities from 2026 onwards.
“The MK will outrightly win the majority of Municipalities in the 2026 Local Government Elections and the Local Government Desk will start with work towards this inevitable reality,” Shivambu announced.
In another elections related decision, Shivambu said the National High Command resolved to
significantly strengthen the Elections Unit. This will include the appointment of dedicated provincial and regional election coordinators under the direct leadership of the National Head of Elections to improve coordination, foster synergy, and ensure efficient allocation and sharing of resources.
“The NHC further resolved that the Head of Elections must be fully supported through enhanced human resources, and expanded logistical capacity, including access to vehicles, campaign materials, and supporting infrastructure.
“The organisation is currently assembling elections campaign vehicles including elections trucks, and we should work towards ensuring that each province has a minimum of 1 elections truck of uMkhonto weSizwe,” he added.
