Wydad Casablanca coach Rulani Mokwena appears ready to throw in the towel after another disappointing result in Morocco.

Mokwena has endured a frustrating first season with Wydad, missing out on the league title, and on Saturday night, crashed out of the Throne Cup, losing 1-0 to Moghreb Atlético Tetuán in the Last 16.

The South African mentor, who’s on a three-year deal, was hopping mad after the match.

“Either we change the mentality or we change the players… or we change the coach,” said Mokwena.

“Some players disappointed me. They were not at the level to represent this club. I’m very angry.”

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach is expected to lead Wydad at the FIFA Club World Cup kicking off in June in the United States (US), but that could be out of reach depending on Wydad’s performance.

Currently third in the Morocco Botola, Wydad will host nemesis Raja Casablanca on Saturday, 12 April, in a bid for a top two finish to secure a spot in next season’s CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, one of the Wydad supporters’ sections, Wydad Red Castle, who are very active on social media, have put Mokwena’s future in the spotlight.

“With this (cup) elimination, it seems the coach may have hammered the final nail in his coffin, losing what remained of the fans’ trust or at least the trust of those who were still backing him, including our page,” wrote Wydad’s Red Castle on the social media platform X.

“We had hoped things would go according to plan, and we did our utmost to protect and support the coach and the players, but it’s now clear that such efforts were in vain, as there are no real signs of any meaningful change.

“The ball is now in the management’s hands: will they renew their trust in the coach until the end of the season, or will they make an immediate decision?”
