MAPUTO — Another deadly crash on Mozambique’s main highway has renewed concern over the high human cost of road accidents, after at least 24 people were killed in a head-on collision in Inhambane province.

The accident occurred on Thursday night in Zavala district, on the National Road Number 1 (EN1), when a passenger minibus collided with a truck belonging to the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM).

Seventeen people died at the scene, and another seven died while being taken to hospital. Two people were injured, one seriously, according to provincial authorities.

The tragedy has once again brought road safety to the forefront in a country where long-distance travel is heavily dependent on the EN1, the main north-south transport corridor.

President Daniel Chapo expressed his “deep sorrow” over the deaths and sent condolences to the victims’ families, while calling on motorists to exercise greater caution and strictly observe traffic regulations.

Authorities have urged drivers to respect speed limits and road signs and to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances that may impair their ability to drive.

The latest crash adds to a worrying national picture. Police figures show that at least 239 people were killed and 1,112 injured in 169 road accidents during the first six months of this year.

In 2025, Mozambique recorded 611 road accidents that claimed 830 lives, according to official figures.

For families mourning those killed in Zavala, however, the statistics represent individual lives suddenly lost. For authorities, the crash is another reminder that reducing the country’s road death toll will require sustained enforcement, responsible driving and greater respect for the rules of the road.
