Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo named Carla Louveira as finance minister and Estevão Pale to lead the ministry of mineral resources and energy on Friday.

Louveira previously served as deputy minister of economy and finance from 2020 and held a director position at the Bank of Mozambique. The economy and finance ministries have now been separated, according to the president.

Pale, who previously served as chairman of Mozambique’s national oil company ENH in 2020 and national director of mines, is expected to play a key role in restarting major gas projects with companies like TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil.

Earlier, Mozambique was grappling with protests following the electoral commission’s announcement of the preliminary results of the general elections held in October.

The ruling FRELIMO party and its presidential candidate Chapo had won.
