“If we have a striker, maybe I’m number three this season.”

With these words, Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has explained the team’s missing link.

Chiefs have failed to make the top eight for a second successive season, and while there are no guarantees Nabi would be staying, he’s not in two minds about what needs to be fixed.

Nabi said Chiefs needed a potent striker, and their top scorer in the league is Wandile Duba, who scored five goals and is nowhere near Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who netted 16.

Nabi has insisted that Chiefs are a work in progress, something he’s pointed out many times.

“I would say that we knew that the season was going to be tough given the process that we are engaged in as a club,” said Nabi.

“However, everything that has been done now, there is a clear path to know what we need to do, which kind of decision we need to take, and which kind of direction we need to go through to be better next season.

“Not qualifying for the top eight is a disappointment, but that can’t undermine the efforts the players have put in and what they have achieved, which is to win the Nedbank Cup. A lot of years without winning (a trophy), and also, not every team has won a trophy this season. Our fans need to take pride in that, take joy in that,” he added.

All eyes are on the Chiefs management, who are expected to make a decision on Nabi’s future after a review of their season.

Nabi has one year remaining on his contract.
