New Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says he is well aware his coaching career is under scrutiny after joining the Buccaneers.

Ouaddou, who hails from Morocco, has been coaching for about five years, and he is yet to win a trophy in his career. He has been at Mouloudia Oujda (Morocco), AS Vita (DR Congo), and Marumo Gallants (South Africa), amongst others.

The Pirates job is arguably his biggest challenge in his young career, and despite the fact that he is yet to win silverware, Ouaddou has explained why he is not losing sleep over it.

“I’m not reading too much on the social network, and maybe I should, because it’s part of the new era and the new society, but people can feel, ‘This coach, what did he win? He’s not experienced; how can he coach such a big club?’. I believe more in the competencies versus experience,” Ouaddou said on Pirates TV, which is his first as Pirates coach.

“Because you can have somebody who was coaching for 20 years, but he didn’t win anything, but on the other hand you can have a young coach with competencies, but he’s starving (hungry); he wants to win. At the same time, you can have a player in your team for 15 years, but he didn’t win anything. But you have a small kid of 16/17/18 years, and he has fantastic qualities, and he can make you win the league. So what are you going to do? You’d choose the experienced one? So, I’m a bit confused about the experience versus competencies, and yeah, what I can say is that it’s a big challenge,” he acknowledged.

The bottom line, however, is that the expectations would be Ouaddou wins trophies, especially after his predecessor José Riveiro brought in five trophies in his three years at the club.

“When I put my foot here at Pirates, I’m not crazy; I know where I am putting my feet. The board knows what they want,” added Ouaddou.
