The Betway Premiership has wasted little time reminding South African football fans why it remains one of the most unpredictable and fiercely contested leagues on the African continent.

Just three matchdays into the 2026/27 season, the early battle for supremacy has already produced a dramatic change at the summit, with defending champions Orlando Pirates knocking Kaizer Chiefs off the top of the table.

The Buccaneers made the biggest statement of the weekend on Sunday when they swept aside Chippa United 3-0 at Kings Park Stadium in Durban, moving to the summit with seven points from three matches.

For Chiefs, the disappointment of surrendering first place came after a promising start to the campaign. The Glamour Boys had opened the season strongly and briefly occupied top spot after victories over Kruger United and Sekhukhune United.

But their momentum was checked on Saturday when they were held to a 1-1 draw by perennial title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.

The result left Chiefs on seven points, level with Pirates, but behind the champions on goal difference. And that is precisely what makes the opening weeks of this campaign so intriguing.

There is barely anything separating the leading contenders, and with the season still in its infancy, every goal, every point and every dropped opportunity could eventually prove significant.

Pirates show the champions’ character

Pirates entered the new campaign under pressure to prove that last season’s success was not a flash in the pan.

As defending champions, the Buccaneers carry the weight of expectation every time they walk onto the field. Yet their response has been impressive.

Their 3-0 demolition of Chippa was more than just another three points. It was a statement of intent from a side that understands the demands of defending a league crown.

Pirates have now scored six goals and conceded just once in their opening three matches, giving them a goal difference of plus five. That defensive solidity could become just as important as their attacking threat as the season progresses.

The Buccaneers know better than most that championships are not won in August.

They are built through consistency, particularly in matches where teams are expected to win.

Chiefs refuse to disappear

If Pirates have sent an early warning, Chiefs have answered with one of their own.

The Soweto giants appear determined to make this season a different story after a period in which they have struggled to match the standards expected of a club of their stature.

Their opening victories generated optimism among the Amakhosi faithful, while the emergence of young players has added an exciting dimension to the team.

Their 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune demonstrated their ability to grind out results, while the earlier 3-1 triumph over newcomers Kruger United showed that Chiefs can also be dangerous going forward.

The draw against Sundowns, meanwhile, offered another indication that Chiefs are capable of competing with the country’s biggest clubs. They may have lost the top spot, but they have certainly not lost their place in the title conversation.

Sundowns remain a threat

There are Mamelodi Sundowns. The defending champions from the previous campaign may not be sitting at the summit, but nobody in South African football will be comfortable writing them off.

Sundowns have dominated the domestic landscape for years, and their 1-1 draw with Chiefs showed that they remain capable of taking points from direct rivals.

The battle at the top is therefore unlikely to be a two-horse race.

AmaZulu have also made an unbeaten start and remain among the early pace-setters, while Sekhukhune United have shown that they can trouble established teams. The early standings underline just how little separates the leading pack.

A season full of possibilities

The most exciting aspect of the 2026/27 campaign is that there is no clear runaway favourite yet. Pirates have the defending champions’ confidence.

Chiefs have renewed ambition.

Sundowns have the experience of champions. And teams such as AmaZulu and Sekhukhune are showing that they are prepared to disrupt the traditional order.
There is also plenty of intrigue at the other end of the table, with newly promoted sides attempting to establish themselves among South Africa’s elite.

The league schedule promises a long and demanding campaign, with the season set to run through to May 2027.

For now, however, the message from Pirates is unmistakable: the champions are here, and they intend to stay in the race.

Chiefs may have been dethroned, but they remain within touching distance. And somewhere in the background, Sundowns are waiting.

The beauty of the PSL is that the table can change in a matter of days. A week ago, Chiefs were sitting proudly at the summit. Now Pirates are back on top. Tomorrow, it could be someone else.

That is the promise of this season, a title race in which reputations count for little, margins are tiny and every weekend carries the possibility of a new chapter.

The race has only just begun, but already the battle for South African football’s crown is heating up.
