Real Madrid’s search for a new coach appears to be over with Xabi Alonso next in line to guide the Los Blancos.
The 15-time UEFA Champions League record winners will part ways with Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, who’s joining the Brazilian senior national team.
Ancelotti’s exit at the Bernabeu opens the door for the return of the club’s former midfielder, Alonso, who’s been with German side Bayer Leverkusen for two-and-a-half years.
Alonso has impressed in charge of Leverkusen. With him at the helm, they won the 2023/24 Bundesliga without a defeat.
“This week, the club and I have agreed that these last two games are going to be my last as Leverkusen coach. Now is the right moment to announce it,” said Alonso ahead of Sunday’s home clash against Borussia Dortmund.
The 43-year-old will then move to Real Madrid on a three-year deal, as per widespread reports.
Alonso played for Real Madrid from 2009 – 2014, winning the Champions League and two La Liga titles.
