Rulani Mokwena Returns to North Africa

Algerian champions Mouloudia Club d’Alger have roped in South African mentor Rulani Mokwena as their new head coach.

The 38-year-old had been biding his time for a new job since leaving Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca a couple of months ago.

While waiting for the “right project,” Mokwena reportedly turned down offers from Saudi Arabia’s second-tier club Al Jandal, as well as Al Shahaniya, who play in the Qatari Stars League.

MC Alger, however, have succeeded in their pursuit of Mokwena, who has agreed to a two-year deal.

The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns coach takes over from the Tunisian, Khaled Ben Yahia, who stepped down recently.

Yahia joined MC Alger on a short-term deal in December 2024 and guided the team to a league title and Super Cup.

Mokwena and his new employers have also agreed he would bring his own technical team, which is in line with international standards.

And perhaps it is worth noting that he would renew his rivalry with former TS Galaxy coach, Sead Ramovic.

The German and Mokwena do not see eye to eye from their days in South Africa’s top flight.

Ramovic is now in charge of Algerian side CR Belouizdad, who ended the season in third place behind champions MC Alger and second-placed JS Kabylie.

Belouizdad also lost the Algerian Cup final to USM Alger 0-2 a week ago.

Mokwena would be eager to hit the ground running at MC Alger, with a special focus on the 2025/26 CAF Champions League.
