Researchers from South Ural State University (SUSU), a TV BRICS partner, have proposed a method that makes it possible to calculate the actual peak load on power grids using average monthly electricity consumption data. The development is particularly relevant for regions where electricity is becoming the main energy source and networks are operating close to their capacity limits. The method is described on the university’s website.

Engineers developed a unique generalised “coefficient A”. It takes into account air temperature, altitude above sea level, building structures and other parameters. By adding this coefficient to a formula together with data from standard electricity meters, it is possible to calculate the actual maximum load on the grid.

Experiments and neural network calculations showed that the method’s margin of error does not exceed 5 per cent.

According to the researchers, this approach makes it possible to plan adequate capacity levels at the design or reconstruction stage of power networks. The developers say the solution reduces the risk of failures, extends equipment service life and ultimately improves the reliability of electricity supplies for consumers.
