The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO), has thwarted yet another attempt to have it registered as a political party and contest the elections outside the ANC-led alliance.

This comes after it learnt that Dr Zukile Luyenge, its former chairperson in the Eastern Cape, has been trying to register the civic organisation as such.

After learning about the attempt, Miko Soko, SANCO’s General Secretary, wrote to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to object.

“Dear Mr. Mamabolo, It is with grave concern that we contact you to alert the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) that you have received an application from a group or person purporting to register the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) as a political party with the IEC.

Besides this group or person having no standing within SANCO, it is well known that SANCO is a non-profit organisation with a NPO registration (NPO126-575) and is not a political party. These individuals have not just attempted to register the name of SANCO, as well as its abbreviated form, but its logo as well,” reads the letter dated 12 June 2025.

Sko then asked the IEC to stop the process.

“We therefore call on the IEC to stop the registration so that a historical body, with a public record in non-governmental work, is not hijacked and registered as a political party, with the assistance of the IEC. We attach for your convenience the Electoral Commission notice of application, so that you are able to trace it and stop the process in its tracks.”

Soko confirmed to the African Times that they have raised an objection with the IEC.
