South Africa’s men’s 4x100m team has won gold at the World Relay Championships in Guangzhou, China, on Sunday.

In-form Akani Simbine produced a stunning performance in the final leg to power to victory in a time of 37.61s.

Simbine got the baton, trailing Brandon Hicklin of the United States, but finished with a flourish to cross the line in first place.

Bayanda Walaza, Sinesipho Dambile, and Bradley Nkoana were outstanding, and Simbine finished the job in style.

The USA finished second in 37.66s, while Canada ran 38.11s for third.

South Africa finally got to make amends after they were stripped of their gold from the 2021 World Relays when Thando Dlodlo tested positive for a banned substance.

South Africa was not done, however, also winning gold in the men’s 4x400m.

The winning time of 2:57.50 is a world lead this year, beating Belgium, who finished second in 2:58.19, and Botswana settled for third with a time of 2:58.27.

Zakithi Nene, Gardeo Isaacs, Udeme Okon, and Leendert Koekemoer represented the country in the 4x400m.

In the women’s 4x400m, South Africa took bronze with a national record of 3:24.84, behind the gold winners Spain (3:24.13) and silver medalists USA (3:24.72).

Team South Africa: the men’s 4x100m, men’s and women’s 4x400m, and the mixed 4x400m have all secured qualification for the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from 13-21 September 2025.
