Orlando Pirates have rewritten the history books of South African football following their 3-0 triumph over Stellenbosch in the MTN8 Final played in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, on Saturday evening.
The Buccaneers have become the first team to win four consecutive top eight titles since the tournament’s inception in 1972.
Pirates’ supporters would also be pleased to know they are now only one top eight title behind rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.
Chiefs have won 15 titles, but Pirates are now on 14, with Mamelodi Sundowns far behind with four to their name.
The match in Mpumalanga was no walk in the park for Pirates against the team from the Cape winelands.
The Soweto side needed extra time to get the better of Stellenbosch, a team they also beat in last season’s final.
Bucs winger Tshepang Moremi stole the show, coming off the bench to replace Thabiso Lebitso with just 16 minutes of regulation time remaining.
The match headed to extra time after a goalless 90 minutes, and Moremi put Pirates ahead two minutes after the restart, before Tshegofatso Mabasa made it 2-0 in the 103rd minute, and once again, Moremi had a goal involvement, assisting Mabasa.
Moremi had the last say when he completed his brace in the 110th minute, and from there, it was game over.
