A 69-year-old Canadian tourist has died following what authorities believe was an accidental firearm discharge during a bush braai experience at the Kruger National Park, prompting a police investigation into the tragic incident.

The fatal shooting occurred on Wednesday evening at a concession-operated picnic and braai site near Phabeni Gate, one of the main entrances to the world-renowned wildlife reserve.

According to preliminary information released by South African National Parks (SANParks), a private guide attached to a concession operator allegedly discharged a firearm accidentally, fatally wounding the tourist.

The victim was part of a group that had booked the bush braai experience through a private concession company operating within the park under a valid permit. SANParks said the group was not staying inside the park but had entered specifically for the outdoor dining experience.

SANParks spokesperson JP Louw confirmed the incident and described it as an alleged accidental discharge.

“A 69-year-old Canadian tourist was fatally wounded in an alleged accidental firearm discharge at a concession-operated bush braai picnic site near Phabeni Gate in the Kruger National Park on Wednesday evening, 17 June 2026,” Louw said.

“According to preliminary information, a private guide affiliated with a concession operator allegedly discharged a firearm accidentally, resulting in the guest’s death.”

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have not released further details regarding how the firearm was discharged.

Louw said the South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently on the scene, investigating the incident.

“The victim was part of a group visiting the park for a bush braai experience hosted by a private concession operating under a valid permit. The South African Police Service is investigating the incident,” he said.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the tourism and conservation community, with SANParks expressing sympathy for the family of the deceased.

“SANParks extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” said SANParks.

Bush braai experiences are a popular attraction in the Kruger National Park, offering visitors an opportunity to enjoy meals in designated wilderness settings under the supervision of qualified guides. Firearms are commonly carried by field guides in certain areas as a safety measure against potential encounters with dangerous wildlife.

While such activities are generally regarded as safe and are conducted under strict operational procedures, the incident highlights the devastating consequences that can arise when accidents occur.

Authorities have urged the public to allow the investigation to run its course and cautioned against speculation while investigators establish the exact sequence of events.
Limpopo SAPS has not yet commented.

For now, the focus remains on supporting the family of the deceased and determining precisely what led to the fatal shooting.

Further details are expected to be released once police have completed their preliminary investigation and more information becomes available.
