The University of Limpopo has confirmed the identity of the 22-year-old student whose body was discovered near the university’s campus fence last week.
The deceased has been identified as Petra Mathaba Tsebe, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) student registered with the university’s Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Medicine.
Tsebe, ULAMS chairperson, who was in her fourth year of medical studies, died on 4 October 2026 in what the university has described as an unnatural death.
Her death was first reported by African Times after her body was discovered near the university’s fence in Mankweng on Sunday morning.
At the time, police said the young woman was found near the university campus, with her identity document and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) card reportedly found nearby. An inquest was opened as police began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
The university has since issued a bereavement notice confirming that Tsebe was one of its students and announcing arrangements for her funeral.
Funeral set for Saturday
Tsebe will be laid to rest on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Ga-Thoka.
The funeral service is scheduled to begin at 07:00, with the service taking place next to Klaas Mothapo Secondary School, after Paledi Mall, according to the university.
Her death has sent shockwaves through the university community, particularly among fellow students and those in the School of Medicine.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation, and no cause beyond the university’s description of an unnatural death has been established publicly.
The university has extended its condolences to Tsebe’s family, friends, classmates and the broader UL community as they prepare to lay the young medical student to rest.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death remain ongoing.
