Wydad president Hicham Ait Mena has categorically denied claims that South African coach Rulani Mokwena has not been paid his salary for months.

It emerged on Tuesday, 8 April, that Mokwena, alongside his technical team, has been offering a ‘free service’ for eight (8) months.

Mokwena joined the club in July 2024 and recruited some of his countrymen, such as Sinethemba Badela and Allan Freese, to make up the technical staff.

African Times has been following up the story that Mokwena could be on his way out as the team struggles for consistency, but now reports have also claimed that he’s not being paid for services rendered.

In Morocco, Radio Mars has spoken to Ait Mena, and the club’s president has insisted that Mokwena is being taken care of.

“This is completely false, and these are just unfounded rumours,” said Ait Mena in response to the alleged salary claims.

Mokwena and his representatives are yet to break their silence over the matter.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach is believed to be keen to continue in the job. He’s on a three-year contract and one of his dreams is to guide the North African team in the FIFA 2025 Club World Cup.

This is the second time in a matter of months that a South African coach was embroiled in salary issues.

In January, renowned SA coach Pitso Mosimane quit his job at Iranian club Esteghal FC amid claims that he had gone for months without receiving his salary.

At the time, it was also claimed that his technical team had suffered the same fate.
