As expected, Egyptian club Al Ahly has sacked Swiss coach Marcel Koller.
Koller’s undoing was the Red Devils’ exit from the CAF Champions League after falling to Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals, on the away goals rule on Friday.
Al Ahly’s top hierarchy met the following day to deliberate on the future of Koller, and the decision was taken to show him the door.
Koller’s departure would be welcomed by the Al Ahly supporters, who pelted the 64-year-old with water bottles as he left Cairo International Stadium after the match against the Tshwane side.
“Due to the emergency circumstances and in light of the distinguished relationship that has been reflected in numerous previous positions, the club is currently negotiating with the coach to terminate the contract by mutual consent in a manner befitting the club and its coach,” the club stated in a statement.
Koller was in charge since 2022, having replaced South Africa’s Pitso Mosimane, and went on to win 11 trophies, including two Champions League titles.
However, that wasn’t enough for Al Ahly, whose mandate for any coach in their employ is winning Africa’s premium club competition, the Champions League.
Mosimane also won two CAF Champions League titles during his 21-month stint with Al Ahly, a team boosting a record 12 CAF Champions League titles.
