In a dramatic turn of events, police have confirmed that Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya, the main suspect in the brutal murder of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale, has been shot and killed in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe announced the news early Friday morning.

“The main suspect in the Olorato Mongale murder case has been shot and killed in Durban, KZN. Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is on the scene.”

The shooting reportedly took place during a high-stakes operation as police closed in on Makhanya, who had been on the run for several days. On a post on X, Mathe said:

“The main suspect in the Olorato Mongale murder case was found by SAPS hiding at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti. When police announced their arrival, he shot at police, police returned fire and he was fatally wounded. Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi is on scene”

Two Suspects Still on the Run

While Makhanya is now confirmed dead, two other suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Bongani Mthimkhulu, are still being sought by police. Both are considered dangerous, and the public is urged not to approach them.

Parents of Suspect Remain in Custody

Meanwhile, the mother and father of one of the suspects remain in custody after being accused of helping their son escape from police. The father is the registered owner of the white VW Polo believed to have been used in the crime, and the mother allegedly tipped off her son before police could arrest him.

May 25: Olorato Mongale was last seen entering a white VW Polo in Johannesburg on a date with her alleged killer.

May 26: Her body was found dumped between Alexandra and Lombardy West.

May 28: The VW Polo was discovered with blood traces in Durban.

May 29: Police arrested the car’s owner and the parents of a suspect. A third suspect was officially named.

This murder case has gripped South Africa, with widespread calls for justice. The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has previously stated:

“This horrific act has deeply shocked and angered the nation. No one deserves to suffer such cruelty.”
