Orlando Pirates are the only team yet to suffer a defeat in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League, and now in the last four, the Buccaneers are within touching distance.
From the earlier rounds to the knockout stage, Jose Riveiro’s men have registered eight wins and four draws.
One win that left a lasting impression was when they saw off the reigning champions Al Ahly 2-1 in Egypt in the group stage.
Pirates will play Egyptian club Pyramids FC in the semi-finals, and with a maximum of four matches remaining in the competition, questions abound whether Pirates can complete an invincible season in the CAF Champions League.
While the Soweto giants have been criticized at times for their display, such as the difficulty in the way they knocked out MC Alger 1-0 on aggregate in the Quarter-finals, Riveiro, the Spaniard mentor at the helm, has previously been quoted emphasizing that results are important.
“Obviously, it’s for everyone to see the way the team managed to go through difficult moments in all of those games, but still managed to win,” Riveiro said.
“That says a lot about our capacity to compete because this competition is not about making it beautiful; it is about digging deeper in each and every phase of the game and being better than the opponent.”
Take nothing away from Pirates, it’s by all means an impressive run, but whether they can maintain it in the semis against Pyramids remains to be seen.
Riveiro is taking things one step at a time and for now, he’s enjoying reaching the semis, before resuming work to prepare for Pyramids.
“This is a fantastic moment for all of us, and we have to really enjoy the moment, and there’s nothing that can change the fact that we are in the semi-finals,” added Riveiro, who clearly reckons that winning the Champions League is mission possible.
