Motsepe Foundation Championship club Durban City has confirmed the death of one of its players.

Center back-cum-midfielder Sinamandla Zondi collapsed during warm-up at halftime in the match against Milford FC at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The 22-year-old was then rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

Zondi, who was nicknamed Sgora, was a key figure of promotion-chasing Durban City, who are top of the First Division log with just a few matches remaining. He played 24 matches this season, missing just one, before his untimely death.

“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Sinamandla Zondi, aka Sgora, a loved member of the Durban City family,” reads the KwaZulu-Natal club’s official statement.

“Sinamandla was more than a talented footballer; he was a teammate, a friend, a brother, a son, and an inspiration to all who knew him.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.”

African Times sends its condolences to the family and friends of Sinamandla Zondi.
