A specialised promotion mission is presenting Egyptian universities, study programmes and admission opportunities to Nigerian students in Lagos, Abuja and Kano
Egypt has launched a specialised education promotion mission in Nigeria as part of a wider effort to expand the country’s education exports, attract more international students and strengthen academic cooperation with African countries, as reported by Sada El-Balad, a TV BRICS partner.
The programme is being organised by the Egyptian General Authority for Exhibitions and Conferences in cooperation with national higher education bodies, the central administration responsible for international students and Egypt’s trade representation in Nigeria. It is being conducted under the “Study in Egypt” initiative.
The mission is designed to give Nigerian students direct access to information about Egypt’s higher education system, including academic programmes, admission requirements and tuition fees. Students can also meet university representatives and education advisers, attend presentations and interactive sessions, and receive preliminary assessments of their qualifications for potential admission.
The outreach reflects Egypt’s ambition to position education as an increasingly important component of its services exports. Officials say direct engagement in major Nigerian cities can help Egyptian universities better understand local demand while increasing awareness of study opportunities in Egypt.
Egyptian higher education authorities also highlighted the country’s growing international academic profile, including improvements by Egyptian universities in global rankings and subject-specific assessments, alongside developments in scientific research and international academic publishing.
Egypt currently hosts students from more than 120 nationalities, offering programmes across a broad range of disciplines and access to established academic institutions, specialist expertise and emerging fields of study.
Officials also see international education as part of a broader educational and cultural experience. Egypt’s historical, cultural and tourism assets are being promoted alongside academic opportunities, while universities are placing greater emphasis on innovation, practical training and applying research outcomes to prepare students for the labour market.
The organisers expect the expanded outreach to support student mobility between the two countries, strengthen institutional links and create new opportunities for academic cooperation between Egyptian and Nigerian universities.
The BRICS countries and partner nations are paying increasing attention to developing cooperation in the field of higher education, through the exchange of academic and research expertise, the organisation of joint educational programmes, and the expansion of student exchange opportunities between universities. These initiatives aim to raise the quality of university education and strengthen partnerships between academic and research institutions.
As part of these efforts, Iran and South Africa have agreed to expand cooperation between universities and academic institutions in both countries, thereby helping to strengthen academic and research ties.
IRNA, a partner of TV BRICS, reported that the agreement was reached during a meeting between Iran’s Deputy Minister of Science, Research and Technology, Masoud Shams Bakhsh, and South Africa’s Deputy Minister for Higher Education and Training, Nomusa Dube–Ncube, on the sidelines of the 13th BRICS Education Ministers’ Meeting, held in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar.
During the meeting, Dube-Ncube outlined the capabilities of South African universities and research centres and proposed strengthening the partnership with Iran through joint research projects and exchanges of academic staff, researchers and students, as well as the organisation of short-term training courses.
In a related development, Malaysia and China have strengthened academic and research cooperation by signing a memorandum of understanding between educational institutions in both countries, aimed at developing partnerships in academic, research and cultural fields.
BERNAMA, a TV BRICS partner, reported that the memorandum of understanding was signed between the Malaysian Rural Development Corporation (MARA) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), in the presence of Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who emphasised that this cooperation represents a new step towards strengthening the partnership in higher education between Malaysia and China.
These initiatives reflect the commitment of the BRICS countries and their partners to building a more interconnected educational and scientific network, based on the exchange of knowledge and expertise, support for scientific research, and the development of young talent, thereby strengthening cooperation amongst the countries of the Global South.
