The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has joined the group of TV BRICS partners in the fields of science and higher education. One of the country’s oldest higher education institutions, University of Gondar, became the first Ethiopian university to launch cooperation with the International Media Network. The agreement on joint activities was signed by the university’s President, Asrat Atsedeweyn, and TV BRICS CEO Janna Tolstikova.

The partnership will focus on strengthening cooperation among BRICS+ countries in the fields of science, innovation and education, as well as enhancing the international standing of participating states. The University of Gondar and the media network plan to implement joint media projects, organise cultural and humanitarian events, promote international exchange of expertise and support the development of expert communities.

“The Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Gondar and TV BRICS marks a meaningful step in strengthening academic–media collaboration and global knowledge exchange. We expect it to enhance academic and research visibility and promote cultural and educational engagement. Overall, the partnership positions the University of Gondar within a broader international communication network,” said Solomon Girma, Director of International Relations and Partnerships Directorate at the University of Gondar.

Betegele Tebelu, Head of the Department of Theatre Arts at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Gondar, expressed confidence that cooperation with TV BRICS would open broad opportunities for the university to showcase Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and creative innovation to a global audience.

“By integrating our academic research and creative productions into the BRICS+ media space, we are fostering an essential intercultural dialogue that empowers our students and elevates our indigenous narratives on the world stage. I would like to say congratulations!” he emphasised.

Founded in 1954 as a public health college and training centre, the University of Gondar is the oldest medical educational institution in Ethiopia and one of the key pillars of the country’s higher education system. Today, the university educates more than 48,000 students. It comprises several colleges and schools, offering 87 undergraduate programmes, 227 master’s programmes, 82 doctoral programmes and eight specialist training programmes.

Evgeniya Tolstoguzova, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department at TV BRICS, noted that partnership with the media network provides educational institutions with new opportunities for the international promotion of professional achievements, scientific research and humanitarian cooperation with foreign colleagues. The issue of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education is reflected in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and remains consistently relevant within the consolidated agenda promoted by TV BRICS.

Today, more than 30 state and public institutions from Russia, Brazil, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Cuba are partners of TV BRICS in the fields of science and higher education. These include members of the BRICS Network University, the Indian Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature, the Group for International Cooperation of Brazilian Universities (GCUB), the Ministry of Education of the State of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and the Ministries of Higher Education and Education of Cuba.

In 2026 alone, new partners joining cooperation with TV BRICS included the International Competence Centre in Mining Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO at Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University, University of Havana and Oscar International College film school.

On the African continent, alongside the University of Gondar, the media network also cooperates with Durban University of Technology.
