Sekhukhune United’s new striker Bradley Grobler has hit the ground running this season, and he is now within touching distance of a Premier Soccer League (PSL) record.
Incredibly, this is Grobler’s 19th season in the professional ranks, and at 37, it may not have come as a surprise if he walked away from the game.
He is the PSL’s third-highest scorer since the league’s inception in 1996, with 120 goals, behind Siyabonga Nomvethe (129) and Peter Shalulile (128).
Grobler and Shalulile are the only active players in the top 10.
However, it has not been a walk in the park for the striker from Johannesburg.
In fact, his father, Les, who was also known for his goal-scoring prowess, advised his son to quit barely five months ago. Grobler Junior has battled injuries throughout his career, so the move to Sekhukhune United came as a surprise.
The retirement talk has died down after Grobler netted three goals for Babina Noko in as many matches, including the winner in Wednesday’s 1-0 win against TS Galaxy.
Grobler’s tally is now 120, and with Shalulile likely to leave the country, this is Grobler’s best chance to end his career on a high.
