Former President Thabo Mbeki has paid a courtesy visit to Deputy President Paul Mashatile at his home as he continues his recovery from a recent minor medical procedure.

Mbeki was accompanied by Thabo Mbeki Foundation chief executive officer Max Boqwana during the visit on Thursday, which Mashatile described as “cordial and assuring”.

The visit comes as Mashatile remains on medical leave on the advice of his doctors, with the Deputy President taking time to recover before returning to his full official responsibilities.

Following the visit, Mashatile expressed his appreciation to Mbeki for checking on him, as well as to members of the public who have sent messages of support.

“I would like to thank Mr Mbeki and many of you who have sent messages of support,” Mashatile said.

The Deputy President also struck an optimistic tone about his recovery, saying he was looking forward to resuming his duties and continuing to serve the country.

“I look forward to returning to my duties in full, serving our nation with renewed energy and commitment,” he said.

Mashatile concluded by thanking those who had supported him during his recovery.

“Inkomu, and may God bless South Africa,” he said.
