The Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) has hailed the Russian Federation and its people for the fighting spirit they showed 80 years ago when the country defeated Nazi Germany in the battle of Stalingrad and later captured Berlin, resulting in the suicide of Adolf Hitler and surrender of the Germans.
South Africa’s third biggest country, led by former president Jacob Zuma, sent its well wishes a day before Russia hosts global leaders like Xi Jinping of China in Moscow during the annual historic victory parade. Xi is among 80 global leaders expected to attend the annual parade hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The MK Party says Russia’s hard-won victory not only brought an end to the terror of fascism in Europe, but also safeguarded the dignity of oppressed people across the world.
“It is a moment etched in the collective conscience of humanity, reminding us of the immense sacrifice of over 27 million Soviet citizens – soldiers, workers and civilians – who gave their lives for the liberation of the world from tyranny and genocide.
“Eighty years on, the relevance of this historic achievement remains as urgent as ever. Today, the world once again faces the resurgence of fascist ideologies, this time veiled in democratic rhetoric but rooted in militarism, regime change tactics and geopolitical manipulation.
“The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is not merely a regional dispute, but a dangerous imperialist offensive. NATO, under the guise of “defending democracy,” is waging a proxy war against the Russian Federation, using Ukrainian territory and neo-Nazi paramilitary factions to destabilise and contain Russia’s sovereignty and global influence,” the MK party said.
The MK Party added that it strongly condemns this aggression and the blatant distortion of history by the West.
“The West seeks to erase or downplay the decisive role of the USSR in defeating Nazi Germany, replacing it with a revisionist narrative that recasts Russia as the villain. This is not only historically dishonest, but also morally bankrupt,” the party added.
