Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) veteran Ndabakayipheli Wilson Macozoma has been granted the official funeral in recognition of his contribution to South Africa’s liberation struggle.
The Special Provincial Official Funeral of Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) veteran Ndabakayipheli Wilson Macozoma will take place on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, in Tsakani, Gauteng, following approval by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Macozoma, who died on 25 December 2025 after a short illness, has been granted the official funeral in recognition of his contribution to South Africa’s liberation struggle. The designation was made after Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi submitted a request to the President.
Affectionately known as Bra Phiri or the “Ball of Fire,” Macozoma went into exile in 1963 after being recruited into the liberation movement. He underwent military training abroad and served the African National Congress (ANC) for several decades, mainly within the logistics and support structures of MK.
During his years in exile, Macozoma operated across several frontline states, including Tanzania and Zambia. He played a key role in transporting supplies, personnel and senior leaders of the movement, and was also involved in supporting allied liberation movements in the region. His work was central to sustaining operations during some of the most difficult periods of the anti-apartheid struggle.
Macozoma was also regarded as a unifying figure among South Africans living in exile, particularly members of the 1976 generation who left the country following the student uprisings. He provided leadership, guidance and organisational support at a time when many young activists faced displacement and uncertainty.
After returning to South Africa in 1992, Macozoma continued his political activism and community work. He remained active in organisational structures and was widely respected as a mentor and a source of unity within his community.
Premier Lesufi described Macozoma’s death as a significant loss to both Gauteng and the liberation movement.
“The passing of Mr Macozoma is a profound loss to Gauteng and to the broader liberation movement. Bra Phiri was a servant of the people and a unifying force whose courage, humility and unwavering commitment to freedom defined a lifetime of sacrifice,” said Lesufi.
The Special Provincial Official Funeral will be held from 08:00 to 11:00 at the Faranani Multipurpose Centre in Tsakani. Government officials, liberation struggle veterans and members of the public are expected to attend the ceremony to pay their final respects.
