President of the New Development Bank (NDB) Dilma Rousseff spoke about the bank’s plans for the second decade of its operations. This was reported by Brasil 247, a TV BRICS partner.

Speaking at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, she said that the NDB should become a larger and more influential financial institution. Its main areas of work will include increasing financing, using national currencies, developing new technologies, supporting trade and investing in sustainable infrastructure.

“The first decade created opportunities for financing by the NDB. In the second decade, we must mobilise far more resources to increase the bank’s development impact,” Rousseff said.

The NDB plans to continue increasing the share of loans issued in the national currencies of its member countries. According to the bank’s President, in 2025 almost 46 per cent of all approved loans were issued in such currencies. This measure reduces foreign exchange risks and supports the development of domestic financial markets.

Rousseff believes that modern infrastructure projects should make use of digital technologies, artificial intelligence and other innovative solutions. At the same time, it is important for countries not only to purchase ready-made technologies but also to develop their own expertise and train specialists. As an example, she cited cooperation between India, China and Russia in the technology sector.

The NDB also plans to provide greater support for trade among BRICS countries by offering financing for international transactions and procurement.

Another important area will be expanding the bank’s membership. In Rousseff’s view, new countries will help the NDB increase the scale of its operations and support more projects in countries of the Global South.

Environmental protection and addressing the consequences of climate change also occupy an important place in the bank’s plans. The NDB intends to increase investment in clean energy, modern transport, water supply, sustainable infrastructure and the energy transition.
