Kenyan football is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
As witnessed in the East African nation on Sunday, football fans were running for cover before the big clash between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia at the Gusii Stadium.
Local publications reported that tensions were high before the match as the two teams headed into the game.
Kenyans.co.ke carried video footage that showed mild scuffles in the stands, presumably between rival fans, leading to injuries and, as alleged, that one fan may have died. This is yet to be confirmed.
Furthermore, Daily Nation reported, “It is understood that Shabana, who were the hosts, had been allocated 10 stands in the 12,000-seater stadium, with Gor Mahia only given three… Gor Mahia fans began pushing into the Shabana-designated stands, sparking confrontations.”

In a statement, the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) has condemned the violence.
“We strongly condemn all forms of violence in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together—not one that puts lives at risk.
“We are working closely with relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations.”
