The race for the 2026 MTN8 final has burst into life, with Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows both securing valuable first-leg advantages in two tightly contested semi-final encounters.

Defending champions Orlando Pirates struck first on Saturday, edging Sekhukhune United 1–0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane to take a precious advantage into the return leg.

Deon Hotto proved to be the difference between the sides, finding the decisive goal in the first half as Pirates demonstrated the efficiency and composure that have made them such a formidable force in the competition.

For Sekhukhune, the defeat was particularly frustrating given that they were playing in front of their home supporters. They now face the difficult task of overturning the deficit when the sides meet again in the second leg at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto on Saturday, 29 August.

Pirates, meanwhile, will take confidence from another strong away performance as they continue their pursuit of a fifth consecutive MTN8 title. The Buccaneers have been dominant in the competition in recent seasons and Saturday’s result leaves them firmly in control of their semi-final tie.

But the weekend’s drama did not end in Polokwane.

On Sunday, Golden Arrows produced arguably the biggest statement of the opening legs when they stunned Mamelodi Sundowns at home in the other semi-final, putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the return encounter.

In the 38th minute, last season’s top goalscorer Junior Dion broke the deadlock for coach Pitso Dladla’s troops, calmly beating Ricardo Goss to hand the visitors the advantage.

The contrasting results have set up an intriguing final week of the semi-finals. Pirates have the narrowest possible advantage over Sekhukhune, while Arrows will look to protect their lead against a Sundowns side renowned for its ability to overturn deficits.

With both ties still finely balanced, the second legs promise another weekend of high-stakes South African football.

Pirates will know that their 1–0 advantage is valuable but far from decisive. Sekhukhune need only one goal to level the tie, while a stronger attacking performance could completely change the complexion of the contest.

Abafana Bes’thende, meanwhile, will enter the second leg believing they have an opportunity to eliminate one of the country’s strongest teams and book their place in the final.

The MTN8 semi-finals have therefore delivered exactly what knockout football promises: small margins, big pressure and everything still to play for.

Next weekend, those margins could determine which two teams walk away with a place in the MTN8 final.

The return leg between Pirates and Sekhukhune will be played at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, 29 August, at 15:00.

The second semi-final will see Abafana Bes’thende host Bafana Ba Style on Sunday at 15:00. Sunday, 30 August, at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.
