South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to jet off to the USA next week to meet with President Donald Trump in a bid to iron out a range of issues in the wake of a major diplomatic fallout between the two nations.
According to the Presidency, Ramaphosa’s four-day official visit will take place between 19 and 22 May this year.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa will embark on a working visit to the United States of America from 19 – 22 May 2025. On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, President Ramaphosa will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House, in Washington DC to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of interest.
“The President’s visit to the US provides a platform to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries. Further details of the visit will be communicated at a later stage,” the Presidency said in an official statement dated 14 May 2025.
The visit comes amid a back and forth between the two countries over the special refugee dispensation granted to Afrikaners to relocate to the US and start a new life. Trump and his senior officials are claiming that Afrikaners are being persecuted based on their race, while South Africa denies that claim as grossly misleading.
There are also tensions between South Africa and the USA over the former’s decision to take the state of Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for allegedly committing genocide against Palestinians.
It’s not yet clear whether Ramaphosa would later have a live press conference similar to the one where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was publicly dressed down by Trump and his associates two months ago.
