President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will wait for the Madlanga Commission to finish its work before deciding what to do about suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Mchunu was put on special leave last year after allegations of corruption and political interference were made against him. These claims are now being examined by the commission.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Mchunu still needs to return to the commission to complete his testimony.

“He still has more evidence to give to the commission. What we have now is based on an interim report,” said Magwenya.

Magwenya explained that Ramaphosa wants to wait for the full findings before taking any final action.

“The president has been criticised for not acting sooner, but he wants a complete picture before deciding what to do about the minister,” he said.

Magwenya also confirmed that the commission’s interim report will be made public, along with the final report, once the process is complete.

Magwenya said the interim findings have already revealed serious problems within the police.

“Even though the situation is concerning, it is positive that action has already started based on the interim report,” he said.

According to Magwenya, the president has already set up an investigative team to follow up on the commission’s early recommendations. Some individuals named in the report have already faced action.

This means authorities are not waiting for the final report before taking steps.

It has also emerged that Ramaphosa received an initial report from the commission in December. Based on that report, he made further recommendations in February, including that several senior police officials should be investigated.

These developments have increased pressure on leadership within the police, as more details about alleged corruption and interference continue to come out.

For now, Mchunu remains on special leave, and no final decision has been made about his future.

The presidency says the outcome will depend on the evidence and recommendations in the final report of the Madlanga Commission.
