Algerian club MC Alger and their head coach, Rulani Mokwena, are very much on the same page, including on the transfer strategy.
The 38-year-old South African has made a huge impression in his first few months with the club.
MC Alger has an 11-point lead over second-placed CR Belouizdad, who are guided by Mokwena’s rival, Sead Ramovic.
While the team has made a great start, the fans of the People’s Club want more, including more signings.
However, MC Alger and Mokwena are well aware that they are not going to get their hands on every player on the wish list.
“For example, I know the fans want (Relebohile) Mofokeng… I know this. Believe me, I want Mofokeng also. He’s a South African and a player that I speak to about certain things about South African football. But it’s not a transfer (that’s going to happen), and not just from a financial perspective, because I can tell you the player has had many, many offers. He has set his sights on going to Europe,” said Mokwena, following Monday’s 1-0 win over Constantine.
“So I can talk about it because it’s just an example. The club (MC Alger) is ambitious, and the club has explored that possibility (of signing Mofokeng), but the player has no ambitions to play in Africa. So, it’s not a lack of ambition from the club.”
The 21-year-old Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana forward has been linked with a host of overseas clubs over the months, including Al-Ettifaq (Saudi Arabia), PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), and Minnesota United (USA).
