South African actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana has been arrested for allegedly driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone along the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal, as authorities warn that reckless driving will not be tolerated during the upcoming festive season.
Mqokiyana, who rose to prominence for her role in the popular television drama Isibaya, was allegedly travelling 78km/h above the prescribed speed limit when she was stopped by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma confirmed the arrest, saying the RTI team from Park Rynie apprehended the actress along the N2 near Ellingham.
According to Duma, Mqokiyana was driving a BMW X3 SUV when she was caught allegedly travelling at 198km/h in an area where the maximum speed limit is 120km/h.
She appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrates Court on October 19 and is expected to return to court on Wednesday, October 28.
The case comes as traffic authorities intensify road safety operations ahead of the festive season, when thousands of South Africans are expected to travel to holiday destinations and visit family and friends.
Excessive speed remains a major road safety concern because it reduces a driver’s reaction time, increases stopping distances and makes collisions more severe.
At 198km/h, a vehicle covers approximately 55 metres every second. This leaves a driver with significantly less time to respond to sudden hazards, including vehicles braking, pedestrians crossing the road or traffic slowing down unexpectedly.
The faster a vehicle travels, the greater the distance required to bring it to a stop. When a collision occurs, the force of the impact can also increase the likelihood of serious injuries or death.
Duma said the arrest demonstrated that the province’s #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation remained in full swing and that motorists should expect strict enforcement of traffic laws.
The MEC warned that the RTI would show no mercy to traffic offenders during the festive season, pointing to the enforcement operations conducted during Transport Month.
Between October 15 and 21, RTI and Operation Shanela teams stopped 12,073 vehicles and charged 1,719 motorists for various traffic offences.
The operations resulted in 421 speeding charges, while 87 motorists were charged with driving without valid licences.
A further 141 motorists were charged with failing to wear seatbelts. Authorities also identified 112 unlicensed vehicles and impounded 140 vehicles for operating without the required permits.
Duma said more than 26 multidisciplinary #NenzaniLaEzweni operations were planned between October 22 and 28, alongside 15 additional operations focusing on drunk driving.
The campaign forms part of efforts to improve compliance with road traffic laws and reduce crashes during a period traditionally associated with increased road travel.
Mqokiyana is a familiar face to South African television audiences. She became widely known for playing Ntwenhle in Mzansi Magic’s telenovela Isibaya, which ran until 2021.
She subsequently appeared in the drama series Abomama and played Amahle Dladla in e.tv’s medical drama Durban Gen. She has also appeared in SABC1’s popular soap opera Uzalo, further establishing herself in the local entertainment industry.
Her arrest serves as a reminder that celebrity status does not exempt motorists from complying with traffic laws. All road users are expected to obey speed limits and take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel.
As the festive season approaches, authorities are urging motorists to drive responsibly, avoid alcohol before driving, wear seatbelts and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.
Duma said the enforcement operations would continue, warning motorists that those who disregard traffic regulations should expect to face the consequences.
