Bafana Bafana skipper Ronwen Williams has insisted that qualifying for next year’s World Cup is certainly mission possible.
Williams, who is now on 55 caps, is the longest-serving member of the team and, based on past experiences, believes the time is now after missing qualification for the 2014, 2018, and 2022 global editions.
“I still feel everything is working out in our favour. I believe in fairy tales. If I remember well, 12 years ago, we had our calculators out in Mbombela, where we are going now (to face Rwanda), and maybe we’re going to correct the wrongs from that time,” said Williams, in reference to the time Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, believing they needed a draw but were pipped on head-to-head by Niger.
Bafana Bafana are second in Group C with 15 points, behind Benin, who top the log with 17 points. In simple terms, Bafana Bafana must beat Rwanda tomorrow and hope Benin fails to win in Nigeria, who are third with 14 points.
“So I’m positive, I have faith, and all the results went our way. Now it’s for Nigeria to play Benin, and I don’t see Benin getting results in Nigeria. It’s just for us to get the job done as well,” Williams added.
“We know how important that game (against) Rwanda is going to be, and we’ve got a score to settle with Rwanda. There’s a lot of motivation behind this game; they are the only team that beat us (2-0) in the qualifiers. The nation shouldn’t lose hope; get behind the boys and keep sending the positive messages, and maybe things will fall in our way.”
Kickoff for Tuesday’s clash will be at 18H00, live on SABC 3.
