Police Misconduct Cases Top 5,000 as IPID Flags Rape, Murder and GBVF Involving Officers

More than 5,000 cases of alleged police misconduct were registered by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in the 2025/26 financial year, including hundreds involving gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

IPID registered 5,259 cases between April 2025 and March 2026, with assault and torture accounting for the largest share at 3,468 cases.

The figures were contained in IPID’s 2025/26 Annual Report, tabled in Parliament on Wednesday by Police Minister Firoz Cachalia.

Two Home Affairs officials have on Wednesday appeared in the Protea Magistrates’ Court in connection with an investigation into an alleged passport racket in which foreign nationals are believed to have paid as much as R100,000 for South African travel documents.

Aluwani Andries Netshidaulu and Nthombifuthi Phyllis Mokwebo were arrested on Tuesday, 29 September, during an operation linked to Project Humulani, an investigation that has been running since 2021.

Medicine prices in South Africa’s private healthcare sector will increase by 2.88% from Thursday as the Department of Health implements an extraordinary second Single Exit Price Adjustment for 2026.

The adjustment applies to all registered medicines and scheduled substances listed on the national database as at 30 September 2026, including different pack sizes.

The Department of Health said the increase was necessary because of exceptional domestic and geopolitical pressures affecting the pharmaceutical sector.
